Beyond Graduation

By Mychal Pagan

In life, there are moments when taking a leap of faith can lead to transformative experiences. For me, the decision to start college was one such pivotal moment. As I reflect on the journey, it's clear that it was marked by hurdles and doubts. However, here in 2024, I stand as a college graduate, disproving my own belief that academic success was beyond my reach. The road was far from easy, but with each challenge, I discovered the unwavering strength within me and the immense impact of community support. My story is marked by early academic struggles. Doubt overshadowed my potential, and I firmly believed that I couldn't excel in an academic setting. Yet, the year 2024 has become a testament to the fact that we are not defined by our past struggles. I shattered my own preconceptions about my abilities and emerged as a proud college graduate and working professional. To tell you plainly, I don’t know what it means to be a professional. My life was shaped by people who didn’t think about work in that way. Work was work; it was something you did and not someone you are. In October of the previous year, I embarked on a new chapter by becoming a member of the Thrive For Life communications team. This marked my second major transition in just three years, as I transitioned from a scholar to a working professional in my chosen field. These transitions tested my innermost drive, passion, and patience – the very energies that had helped me survive incarceration and earn my college degree.

Stepping into the professional world introduced me to a fresh set of challenges. Time and project management have emerged as formidable obstacles, demanding a fine balance between meeting deadlines and multitasking. All the while, I remain committed to nurturing my growth as a photographer and filmmaker. Effective communication presents yet another formidable barrier. My journey, from behind the walls of incarceration to donning the cap and gown beyond my incarceration as a college graduate and professional in communication, illuminates the extraordinary power of resilience. Through every twist and turn, I've leaned on the incredible support of my community. Mentors, professors, and the Thrive For Life community have played pivotal roles in my journey. My path, while challenging, is a testament to the beauty and challenges of pursuing higher education and chasing one's dream career. It carries a resounding message: with unwavering determination, resilience, and the steadfast support of a community, one can surmount even the most daunting obstacles. As I embark on the journey to refine my time management, project coordination, and communication skills, I do so with the knowledge that incredible opportunities await those who dare to believe in themselves and lean on their community for support.
